Police confirmed that two people were injured at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo. on Dec. 13, and the teenage male suspected shooter died of apparent suicide. The school is in the Littleton Public Schools system in suburban Denver, the same as Columbine High School, which was the site of an awful school shooting massacre in 1999, and a few miles from the Aurora movie theater shooting of 2012.
Centennial Colorado School Shooting — Arapahoe High School Gunman Dead
The students of the high school were calmly evacuated from the building by police, exiting the school with their hands up. All of the students were brought to the school’s track field and were subject to police pat-down to check for other weapons and potential suspects. This evacuation procedure was put into place after the awful Columbine shooting and helps to quickly eliminate other threats.
Police did not immediately reveal the condition of anyone injured, but later updated that the shooting suspect was found dead in the building, and police believed it to have been suicide. At least one minor victim was brought to a nearby hospital, and is reported to have a serious gunshot injury. A second student was found injured with a minor gunshot wound as the school was being evacuated, according to CNN. The students’ conditions were later updated to one student “serious” and undergoing surgery and the other as “good.”
The gunman was said to be interested in confronting a specific teacher in the school, but that teacher was able to be evacuated from the school without injury.
All schools in the Littleton Public Schools system area were placed under lockdown in the wake of the shooting. Arapahoe High School has 2,229 students.
This horrific incident comes just one day before the one year anniversary of the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in Newtown, CT.
Actress AnnaSophia Robb graduated Arapahoe High, and tweeted a sad message after she heard about the shooting:
My heart hurts so much right now for my alma mater #ArapahoeHighSchool “#Warriors always take care of each other.”
