Anderson Silva fans were heartbroken when the UFC icon suffered a gruesome leg break during his fight with Chris Weidman on Dec. 28. Now, the former middleweight champ’s career future is up in the air.
Anderson Silva, 38, knew he was taking a chance when he fought Chris Weidman for the middleweight title on Dec. 28, and now the beloved UFC star is facing early retirement due to the horrific injury that cost him the title.
Anderson Silva Facing Early Retirement
Fans were shocked when Anderson tried to take Chris down with a swift kick, which Chris was quick to block with his own leg. The impact of the contact broke Andersonâs left leg immediately, bending it gruesomely and causing the fighter to fall to the mat in agony. Chris was declared the winner at 1:16 into the second round, and two days later UFC President Dana White said Silva might not have the physical capability or desire to return to fighting. Chris had a rod inserted into his left tibia and his broken fibula was stabilized in surgery, but it’s still not enough to get him back in fighting condition, the Los Angeles Times reports.
“This would be a tough thing to overcome at his age,” Dana said. “Anderson Silva’s been amazing, one of the greatest of all time. It’s a [bad] way to see him go out, but it’s part of the game…Â He’s an incredible human being. Maybe he’ll want to make a comeback. I don’t want to count him out, don’t want to count him in.”
Chris, for his part, is celebrating his victory but definitely feeling the sadness over Anderson’s tragic defeat.
âI knew that he could hurt me most with the leg kicks. We trained checking the kick a lot,â Chris told the Los Angeles Times after the fight. âThe idea is to pull your leg and for the shin to land at the knee. Thatâs exactly what I did and I felt his leg go right away.â
So heartbreaking. What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Should Anderson call it quits, or risk his health to fight again?
