Beau drops some major spoilers about season 4, including Matty’s plans — or lack thereof — for the future.
Awkward wrapped its third season Dec. 17, giving everyone in Palos Verdes just the right amount of closure, while still leaving their futures very much open-ended. Jenna and Matty began the hour apart, but did the magic of prom bring them together once again? HollywoodLife.com spoke with Beau Mirchoff about Jenna’s big decision, her chances for an eventual reunion with Matty, and what we can expect from the gang’s final year in high school.

So, Matty’s with Bailey and Jenna’s alone. Are you happy with that?
I feel great about it. I think [Bailey's] a smart, attractive, funny young lady. She’s similar to Jenna in a lot of ways if you go back to season one, which is interesting to look at. And [McKaley Miller] is a great actress as well, and a fun person. She’s great to have around.
Do you ever go back and watch season one?
I have watched the pilot recently, and I look a lot older — and maybe about 15 pounds heavier. So, aside from vanity, the show has definitely evolved and still maintained its integrity.
They’re apart for now, but is there still hope for Jenna and Matty?
I definitely think so. Who knows what could happen over an entire summer? I think Matty and Jenna were each other’s first loves, and you never really lose that.
Do you think she deserves him back, or does he still needs to make amends?
I still think she needs to make amends. Matty was quick to forgive her. Personally, if I be cheated on, I’m not forgiving that girl anytime soon. I’m especially not going to go to her house to ask if I can take her newly formed friend to prom.
He really was kind of a doormat this season.
Yeah, geez! Right? He’s such a softy. What happened, Matty? What happened? He went from being the oblivious douche bag to just being oblivious.

How far along on season four are you guys?
We haven’t started filming yet, we do that in the new year. But we’ve read some scripts and had some table reads and I’m very excited. The new season starts in senior year, and all the characters feel like they’ve already graduated. So everybody’s getting ready for college. I will say the content becomes more mature, which is actually really funny. There’s some great stuff for Matty you definitely won’t see coming. … He’s an alien!
Senior year means the end of high school. Does Matty have a shot at getting into college?
Oh, I don’t know. If anything, he’d be able to get a sport scholarship, then major in basket weaving. Something like that.
I know it’s premature, but have you considered what post-high school ‘Awkward’ might look like?
[Laughs] Actually, Brett and I thought it would be funny if the show just focused on Matty who doesn’t go to college. He’s got some dead-end job. Or ‘Matty And Jake Do Hong-Kong.’
How are Jenna and Matty when senior year starts?
I will say they don’t see each other once over the summer. They go their separate ways and do their own thing. They run into each other on the first day of senior year, and everything sparks from there.
Lastly, ‘Awkward’ is getting some new showrunners in season four. Will the show feel any different?
They’re working hard to maintain the show’s integrity, and to make sure it has the same tone. It’s Lauren’s brainchild, and fans have fallen in love with what she made. Everybody wants to stay true to that.
