‘Duck Dynasty’ Should Be Canceled After Phil Robertson’s Comments

Phil Robertson’s family may be standing behind him and his comments, but in my opinion, it’s time for ‘Duck Dynasty’ to be taken off the air. I also consulted several theologians for their analysis of Phil’s ‘Biblical’ tirades.

After publicly saying that gay people won’t go to Heaven, and calling them “full of murder, envy, strife, [and] hatred,” Phil Robertson shouldn’t be honored with a show on A&E. He has every right to express himself, sure, but is it right to put someone on air and pay them thousands of dollars after the offensive comments he made?

‘Duck Dynasty’ Should Be Canceled

I want to start by saying that I get it; everyone is free to say anything they want to. The First Amendment is clear about that, as thousands of supporters have stated. However, I’m curious to know how those same supporters would feel about a public reality star ignorantly bashing the Bible.

The Robertson family has threatened to quit the show, and while it’s great they’re all sticking together, they should quit. In addition, I believe A&E should cancel the show.

Many have been pointing out that we’re leaving out the next part of the interview, where Phil states:

We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to Heaven, Hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ‘em, give ‘em the good news about Jesus â€" whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ‘em out later.

But is that his example of never judging others? By comparing homosexuals to drunks and terrorists?

“Such hostility to male homosexuality is hardly unique to the Bible, but was typical of the ancient world in which [Apostle] Paul wrote,” David Carr said. David is the professor of Old Testament at Union Theological Seminary in New York and author of The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality and the Bible and The Formation of the Hebrew Bible: A New Reconstruction.

“Phil, however, reads these words by Paul as a divine judgment on homosexuality in general,” David added. “And like many other conservative Christians, he claims to be a ‘Bible thumper,’ but actually improvs on the Bible, claiming that homosexuality of any kind leads to all kinds of bestiality, promiscuous sex, etc.”

Rev. Dr. Hal Taussig, Visiting Professor of New Testament and Co-Pastor of the Chestnut Hill United Church in Philadelphia, Pa. also talked to HollywoodLife.com about the comments.

“As someone who loves Jesus, is a Christian, and a professor of New Testament for 30 years I am convinced that same sex relationships are not any more sinful than opposite sex relationships, Jesus embraces people of same and opposite sex relationships, and we are all called to relationships of truth, integrity, and mutual affection,” Rev. Taussig said.

Does Phil Robertson ‘Love All’ Or Judge All?

David also made the same point that I made above — that Phil’s statements don’t add up. The Duck Dynasty star says he ”loves all humanity,” yet sees nothing wrong with bashing some many huge people groups.

“The different statements, even the one Phil made, don’t fit together,” David added. “He judges, but he loves and doesn’t judge? That is the question.”

As you know, Phil didn’t just attack homosexuals but also took a stab at other religions in the interview, saying that Shintos, Nazis, Communists and “Islamists” don’t have Jesus in their lives.

“In terms of Mr. Robertson’s comparing practitioners of Shinto and Islam to Nazis and other murderous types, there is little to say except that Mr. Robertson’s history, train of thought, and rationale are not reliable.  I would encourage readers to disregard such assertions,” Rev. Dr. Hal Taussig said.

“My strong Christian opinion that Mr. Robertson’s placing of Jesus in opposition to the outsiders of our world does not match with scriptures’ portrait of Jesus as someone known for his frequently being with those condemned by much of his society like the prostitutes and tax collectors.  There are many biblical ways for Christians today to stand up for LGBT and Muslim ways of life,” he continued.
