I Love Lucy and “new” aren’t often uttered in the same sentence – the show ended its run in 1956 and star Lucile Ball passed away in 1989 — but lo and behold, CBS performed a Christmas miracle Dec. 20, airing two back-to-back episodes of the classic sitcom. And in color, no less!
‘I Love Lucy’: CBS Airs Two Colored Episodes
Billed as the “I Love Lucy Christmas Special,” the full-hour event featured two popular installments: “The I Love Lucy Christmas Episode,” which originally aired in Dec. 1956, and “Lucy’s Italian Movie,” which originally aired in April of the same year.
And yes, that second episode featured I Love Lucy‘s iconic grape-stomping scene, which was even funnier in color. Some things just never stop being hysterical.
As for the actual Christmas episode — which was originally referred to as a “lost” episode — was full of everything you’d expect from I Love Lucy, including multiple references to Lucy being completely tone deaf. (And she seriously wonders why Ricky won’t let her sing at his club?)
The best part of the hour-long special, though, was the way CBS added color without losing the vintage feel of the original episodes. The network really went above and beyond; it was a true gift to long-time Lucy fans, as well as the perfect way to introduce new fans to the beloved classic.
