‘Nymphomaniac’ Reviews: Shia LaBeouf Sex Film Shocks & Provokes

‘Nymphomaniac’ Reviews: Shia LaBeouf Sex Film Shocks & Provokes

The early reviews for ‘Nymphomaniac’ are in, and the Shia LaBeouf-starring two-part sex epic might just be a hit! Critics says that the very sexually explicit four-hour film is insane, but also ‘provocative, funny, smart, wry and challenging.’

Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier‘s controversial four-hour “sex epic” that features unsimulated sex scenes with the likes of Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, has finally been screened by a select group of top critics. Read what the nation’s top movie minds had to say about the hard-core flick below!

‘Nymphomaniac’ Is ‘An Orgy Of The Sublime And The Ridiculous’

Nymphomaniac, the “erotic tale” of one self-described nymphomaniac woman’s (Charlotte’s) life, has made headlines since its inception due to its controversial subject matter and, most importantly, von Trier’s insistence on including unsimulated sex scenes. The director digitally composited porn stars’ genitals onto the bodies of the film’s cast â€" so don’t go in expecting real Shia LaBeouf porn â€" but the movie will still be a very-NSFW shocker. Still, the critics seem to love it â€" only a few “top critics” have been able to see the film so far, but as of Dec. 18 it holds a 100 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

So, should you see it? Check out what the critics have to say and decide for yourself â€" just make sure to leave Grandma at home for this one.

Time Out

“Lars Von Trier’s wild, sprawling Nymphomaniac is an orgy of the sublime and the ridiculous… Chaotic and not especially pretty, it has more of the punkish, radical spirit of The Idiots or Dogville than the gloss or contained drama of Antichrist.”

Hollywood Reporter

“This smorgasbord of talk and sex constitutes a very full meal… There are flashes of hard-core action during the initial two hours — the odd angle here and there, some insert shots — but mostly the sex scenes look like pretty standard simulation.”

The Telegraph

“You could watch these films for four hours, then spend 14 arguing about them — about whether sex, for vor Trier, is an eternal human mystery, or a cosmic joke at our expense.”

Variety

“With his sexually explicit, four-hour magnum opus, Nymphomaniac, world cinema’s enfant terrible Lars von Trier re-emerges as its dirty-old-man terrible, delivering a dense, career-encompassing work designed to shock, provoke and ultimately enlighten a public he considers altogether too prudish. Racy subject aside, the film provides a good-humored yet serious-minded look at sexual self-liberation, thick with references to art, music, religion and literature, even as it pushes the envelope with footage of acts previously relegated to the sphere of pornography.”

Screen International

“Yes it is provocative, funny, smart, wry and challenging (though never sexy) but it is also a remarkable project brimming with bold and often thoughtful performances.”

What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Americans won’t get to see the films until their release dates on March 21 and April 18 respectively, but does the early positive buzz sway your moviegoing plans?
