Ariana Grande: It’s Great You Apologized For Your Selena Gomez Diss

Ariana Grande: It’s Great You Apologized For Your Selena Gomez Diss

After Selena was caught lip-syncing at Jingle Ball on Dec. 6, Ariana seemed to show her fangs by poking fun at her fellow pop princess’ misfortune. But Ariana quickly cleared the air afterwards, and I couldn’t be prouder of her for facing the drama head-on.

Ariana Grande is still such a newcomer to the pop landscape, especially when compared to a girl like Selena Gomez. Honestly, we don’t even know who Ariana really is yet. But she showed her true colors on Dec. 6 — dissing Selena’s lip-syncing debacle at Jingle Ball in Los Angeles and then quickly explaining her comments and apologizing — and I loved what I saw.

Ariana Grande: Did She Let A Selena Gomez Diss Slip?

Let’s talk about the diss first. After the same sound issues that revealed Selena’s lip-syncing terrorized Ariana’s set, she finished her song like a seasoned veteran (did I mention she was performing with bronchitis?) before then snarking, “At least you know I wasn’t singing to a track.” Sorta sounds like she had someone in mind, no?

I never want to promote a pop star feud — those girls gotta stick together — but the diss (I’m assuming she meant it as one) showed me that Ariana has the guts to stand up to her pop predecessors. Ariana’s jumping into a pool that’s already filled by Selena, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and more — she’s going to need that kind of fight and attitude to survive.

There is nothing wrong with confidence and carrying yourself like you’re the top dog — just look at Kendrick Lamar.

Ariana Grande Apologizes For Dissing Selena Gomez

Now, after the concert was over, Ariana explained away her comment by saying that she was only joking about her technical difficulties and that she wasn’t referring to anyone in particular:

That’s reasonable enough, it makes sense, but do I believe her? The answer: It doesn’t matter.

What matters is that Ariana was brave enough to immediately take responsibility for her actions and squash the drama that was building before it got out of control. Selena, who dropped a big F-bomb in response to her sound issues at Jingle Ball, was probably steaming mad after hearing what Ariana said. But the singer was smart, humble, and courageous to make sure Selena didn’t feel disrespected.

Ariana Grande: Confident But Humble

In a landscape as competitive as female pop music, it’s okay to puff out your chest and be a little cocky from time to time — and I’m thrilled to see Ariana has some of that HBIC spiciness in her DNA. But when you fly off with your mouth, you have to be ready to admit your mistakes. That’s exactly what Ariana did.

She’s still growing up, but this whole incident has convinced me that the Selenas and Mileys of the world better watch out. Not because Ariana’s going to diss them, but because she has the confidence and the humility to become even more adored than they are.
