With only two weeks until a winner is crowned, The Voice‘s final six singers came together in perfect discord Dec. 2, vying for a spot in the season’s final five. Each singer got to tackle two songs this week, giving fans a better idea what they’re voting — or in some cases not voting — for.
Round 1: Cole Vosbury Reminds Everyone How ‘Great’ He Is
Cole Vosbury got things started on a high note with his rendition of “Rich Girl” — the Hall & Oates version, not the Gwen Stefani one — and the coaches couldn’t have been more thrilled with his performance. Even Adam Levine had to admit that Cole’s voice is, simply put, “great.”
Speaking of Adam, his girl Tessanne Chin was the next singer to perform, and she somehow managed to set the bar even higher. Her effortless, soulful cover of Bob Marley‘s “Redemption Song” had everyone feeling the love — including Christina Aguilera, who referred to the soothing performance as a “lullaby.”
Going for a more contemporary feel, Team Christina’s Matthew Schuler blew the crowd away with his own spin on One Direction‘s “Story Of My Life.” It wasn’t the best performance of the night, but the coaches seemed to agree it was better than the original version.
The emotions continued as Will Champlin took the stage, dedicating his performance of Sam Cooke‘s “A Change Is Gonna Come” to his wife. Cee Lo Green noted that it was an “ambitious” song choice, but Will did a pretty good with it. (He’d just better hope that “pretty good” is good enough!)
Then came wild-card James Wolpert. You never know what you’re going to get from this bespectacled chap, but he totally delivered with his rendition of The White Stripes‘ “Fell In Love With A Girl.” In fact, Blake Shelton said he enjoyed James’ performance so much that he “didn’t know that there was a mess-up in the middle!”
Capping off the first half of the evening was Jacquie Lee‘s gut-wrenching performance of Janis Joplin‘s “Cry Baby.” Every bit as raw and emotional as it needed to be, Jacquie had the coaches — the audience — completely under her spell.
Round 2: Cole Vosbury Proves He’s A ‘Better Man’ Than The Rest
Back for round two, Cole delivered another solid performance, this time taking on James Morrison‘s “Better Man.” Blake complimented Cole on his ability to “do it all,” and I’m inclined to agree.
The tears kept on flowin’ with Tessanne’s cover of Katy Perry‘s “Unconditionally,” which she dedicated to her parents, who are now separated. Adam acknowledged that there’s “a lot to cover” with Katy’s songs, but he “wasn’t worried” about Tessanne’s abilities.
Matthew was up next, singing Percy Sledge‘s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” which Christina hand-picked herself. Though she acknowledged Matthew was “a bit nervous” to take on the song, she still said that “it takes a great vocalist to embody different genres.” That was a compliment — right?
Stealing James’ thunder of weirdness, Will busted out his banjo for a performance of Avicii‘s “Hey Brother,” which the coaches actually loved. They weren’t all sure what to make of it at first — Blake admitted he’d “never heard” it before — but eventually, they came around.
As a last-ditch effort, Jacquie took on “The Voice Within,” dedicating it to the artist herself — Christina! It was a bold move, one Xtina certainly seemed to appreciate. “It took me,” Christina admitted.
