‘The Walking Dead’ delivered its deadliest, most explosive midseason finale yet Dec. 1, killing several main characters. The most beloved of those characters revealed everything in a tell-all interview, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know who died on ‘Walking Dead.’
During the Dec. 1 episode of The Walking Dead, a fan-favorite character was killed off in a very gruesome fashion. Read on to find out what the actor had to say about the episode, “Too Far Gone!”
‘The Walking Dead’: Hershel Is Decapitated By The Governor
Oh, great. A mere three weeks after Hershel’s (Scott Wilson) finest episode to date, “Internment”, the beloved character was killed off execution-style by the series’ villain, The Governor (David Morrissey), in front of his understandably horrified daughters. HollywoodLife‘s sister site TVLine spoke to Scott after his emotional goodbye, which the actor admits was “disorienting.”
“[Finding out about Hershel's death] was disorienting,” he says. “It would be under any circumstance. There’s no good time to tell someone that they are expendable. I would have preferred to still be [on the show]. I’m not, and now I’ll just be a fan instead of a participant.”
With The Walking Dead‘s phenomenal fan base and record ratings, I wouldn’t want to be killed off, either. Still, Scott was more than gracious about his character’s untimely demise. “A lot of the conversation [about Hershel's death] was confidential,” he says. “If I were to talk too much about it, I wouldn’t be doing him any service or the show any service. But it was going to be someone. It’s the halfway point of the season â€" you know someone’s going. And it happened to be my turn.”
‘The Walking Dead’ Cast Says Goodbye To Scott Wilson
As I said before, Scott did some of his finest work this season, as Hershel took control of the Grimes Gang and made some very difficult decisions for the ailing group. It was a great chance for Scott to stretch his acting chops, but it also caused him to suspect that something was amiss. Hershel had previously taken a more minor role in group affairs, and stepping out from the sidelines can be deadly business on this show. (Just ask Merle!)
“In [episode] 4.03, Hershel took some very proactive positions,” Scott says. “When he went into the prison with the elderberry tea I said, ‘Uh-oh.’ And then in [episode] 4.05, it was a lot of Hershel being very proactive. I suspected it, and it was confirmed after we were through shooting that episode… [Scott] Gimple, the showrunner, had me come in. We sat down and had a conversation, and he explained what he was doing and why he was doing it. It’s not an easy position for him to be in. He is doing what he believes is best for the show. And so far, I think he has been on point.”
Agreed, though saying goodbye to Hershel is not going to be easy â€" especially for his daughters, who have to live with the image of their dad’s head being split in two. And from what Scott says, it sounds like the cast is going to have a hard time with it, too â€" they showed their love for the actor in a sweet show of solidarity on set.
“It was such an interesting day, my last day on the set,” Scott says. “Everyone came out wearing suspenders. The cast, the crew â€" everyone had suspenders on. It was very heartwarming to see that they cared that much about me leaving. There’s a bond there that will endure… The entire cast is just fantastic. And the show is going to do very well without Hershel.”
