The reviews are in, and top critics have officially fallen in love with Carrie Underwood as Maria Von Trapp in ‘The Sound Of Music Live’! NBC’s live production finally aired on Dec. 5, and reviews from the industry’s brightest has been extremely positive.
Even though no one could ever replace the legendary Julie Andrews, we have to admit, we totally fell in love with Carrie Underwood as Maria in NBC’s live Sound of Music production on Dec. 5 — and so did critics! Some reviews of the live production have been described as “superior” and “all whiskers on kittens!”

“Underwood can deliver the songs. The production itself came off without a hitch — no easy feat with so many moving parts. The supporting cast was strong: Laura Benanti was appropriately sultry as Elsa Von Hottie, while Christian Borle was appropriately hammy as Max Detweiler and someone should find a way to have McDonald sing audiences into every commercial break. The camerawork â€" by directors Rob Ashford and Beth McCarthy-Miller (who directed 30 Rock’s live episodes) â€" was clear.

“The cast and crew of NBC’s three-hour live telecast of “The Sound of Music” pulled it off Thursday night. It was all whiskers on kittens and warm woolen mittens. Carrie Underwood, an “American Idol” winner and country music star, sang well as Maria. The directors — Tony-nominated director and choreographer Rob Marshall and Emmy-nominated “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” director-producer Beth McCarthy-Miller — used all six sets efficiently and the dozen cameras worked hard, catching close-ups as well as sweeping shots. Borle was arch and wonderfully slimy as Max, Benanti was glamorously witty as Elsa, and McDonald was a majestic Mother Abbess. Michael Campayno as Rolf was a natural though he’s still in drama school and Ariane Rinehart was a winning Liesl. Stephen Moyer, who is primarily known for his work on HBO’s “True Blood,” was a particularly stern Captain . But Carrie Underwood was the star.”
