Yup, you were caught with your pants down and your privates public. But instead of denying that these were your photos or having a publicist issue a stern statement, you decided not to hide out but to get out in front of your fans’ response, by joking in tweets.
“Whoops, guess I’m not 14 and fat anymore,” you tweeted on Dec. 15 at 11:09 p.m. Then you added, “I messed up…but I’d be a fool not to own up to it.”
You know what, Dylan — you’re absolutely right. You did mess up. No one who’s a celebrity should ever take nude photos — they just have a habit of going public.
After all, you were the star, along with your brother, Cole Sprouse, of the highly popular Disney hits The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then The Suite Life on Deck.
At 21, you’re a veteran of six years of super popular kids TV shows, and you’ve already seen the hoopla that other Disney stars like Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus had to deal with their own nude pics leaked.
Nevertheless, you’ve made a quick and really smart recovery from this episode.
After step #1, joking, you #2, got your twin, Cole, to join in the damage control by laughing about the situation too. He tweeted at you, “@DylanSprouse: Cold in the bathroom huh?”
Now, with step #3, you’ve spoken out in an open and insightful Tumblr posting, pointing out that you don’t feel that what you did — taking a naked selfie — was wrong.
“I’m proud of my progress in the gym, thought I looked hot and wanted to share it,” you explained. “I’m of the mindset that whoever you are, if you are proud of your body and want to show it off, so be it.” You were very philosophical about your public nudity and you made an interesting point.
“There is an odd taboo with the human form (especially in the USA) and I don’t particularly think it’s a good thing to teach people that you should ‘hide yourself’ … that’s a medieval notion,” you added.
But then, you really laid the blame for your exposure where it belonged — on the person who must once have been very close to you, who actually released the photos — since you sure didn’t. “The real travesty is a misplaced trust,” you laid it on the line. “The real problem was not me sending my pictures to someone, but rather sending them to the wrong someone.”
So true, and sad, that someone that you trusted and felt close to would betray you like that. Most people aren’t necessarily thinking about how hurtful that must feel.
