Eleanor’s friend Richard told the Associated Press that she ”passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children at a medical facility near her home in Palm Springs.”

We’re sorry to see Eleanor go but so grateful that she lived such an amazing and full life!

The stunning red-headed actress, who was such a versatile star that she was dubbed the “Woman of a Thousand Faces,” was nominated for three Academy Awards in her life. She received the nods for her performances as a prison inmate in 1951′s Caged, as Kirk Douglas‘ wife in 1952′s Detective Story, and as an opera singer in 1955′s Interrupted Melody. But Eleanor is perhaps best known for playing Elsa Schraeder in The Sound of Music, which was her last major film role.

Laura Benanti’s Elsa Schraeder Steals The Show In ‘Sound Of Music’ Remake

Eleanor lived just long enough to see NBC’s much-talked about live production of Sound of Music, which aired on Dec. 5.

Broadway star Laura Benanti took on Eleanor’s iconic role in the new production — and while no one can replace the legendary Eleanor, we think Laura did the late actress proud. Elsa, who was never meant to be the star of the show, often stole the spotlight in this new production — much like Eleanor did in the 80+ movies and television series she starred in.
