Michelle Obama didn’t look too pleased in the now famous photo of Barack Obama posing flirtatiously with Denmark’s Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, during Nelson Mandela’s memorial. But the photog who snapped the photo says there’s more to it than meets the eye!
Michelle Obama may have looked like she was giving President Obama and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt the death stare as the two leaders huddled together for a group selfie with British Prime Minister David Cameron. But the photographer who took the photo, Roberto Schmidt, insists that Michelle’s “stern look” didn’t reflect how she was really feeling. “Photos can lie,” he says.

Appearances can be deceiving! Michelle wasn’t mad at all in this photo — in fact, she was in appropriately high spirits at the celebratory memorial, which Roberto describes as being ”more like a carnival atmosphere, not at all morbid.”
“I read on social media that Michelle Obama seemed to be rather peeved … but photos can lie,” Roberto writes on the global news agency blog, AFP.com. “Just a few seconds earlier, the First Lady was herself joking … Her stern look was captured by chance.”
While Michelle’s seemingly angry stare caught our eye, others were more focused on the president’s ear-to-ear grin in the pic, which didn’t seem appropriate given the circumstances. But Roberto says the smiling selfie shouldn’t be frowned upon — it was actually very fitting.
“All around me in the stadium, South Africans were dancing, singing and laughing to honour their departed leader,” he says.

When President Obama, 52, stood up to deliver his touching speech honoring the late Nelson Mandela, Michelle leaned in and chatted with Helle as well — so we know for certain there are no hard feelings.
After President Obama was done, he was spotted giving Helle, 46, a quick peck on the cheek and then kissing Michelle’s hand — how romantic!
That settles it — Helle may be a beautiful, powerful blonde, but she’s no match for Michelle in Barack’s book!
