Students at the University of New Haven were told to seek âShelter In Placeâ around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 after one gunman was reported to be seen on campus.
Police have detained one suspect reported to be a gunman carrying what appears to be a rifle on the University of New Haven’s campus in West Haven, Conn. The whole campus was advised to stay indoors because a “methodical search” is still taking place, according to the university’s Twitter page. Keep reading for more details.Â

Around 12:30 p.m., the university tweeted they were reporting an Asian male gunman near the South Campus:
EMERGENCY: WHPD has reported an Asian male near South Campus with what appears to be a rifle. SHELTER IN PLACE and await further instruction

They updated students an hour later to still seek shelter:
UPDATE: … All reports are that there is one suspect in custody however a methodical search is taking place. Continue to SHELTER IN PLACE.

Nearby Public Schools Seeking ‘Shelter In Place’ Because Of Gunman
The University of New Haven enrolls about 6,400 students. The majority of its 4,600 undergraduates live in university housing. Several nearby public schools also put out shelter in place orders as a precaution, according to the AP.
Yale University in nearby New Haven, Conn., was locked down for close to six hours on Nov. 25 after a man anonymously called police on a payphone near the campus and said somebody was coming to “shoot up the school.”
