Paul, 40, was known to family and friends as a loving individual, and this new story further proves his generosity. Almost ten years ago, Paul secretly did a good deed and bought an engagement ring for a military couple that couldn’t afford it.
The world is mourning the loss of Paul Walker, who died on Nov. 30 in a tragic car crash. However, his thoughtfulness will live on for generations to come, after Kyle Upham and Kristen Upham, of Santa Barbara, Calif., revealed that Paul secretly bought them an engagement ring in 2004. In a new interview with CBS Los Angeles, the couple described his act of kindness as the “most generous thing” anyone has eve r done for them.
Paul Walker Bought $ 9K Engagement Ring For Soldier Who Couldn’t Afford It
During the holidays almost 10 years ago, Paul changed Kyle and Kristen’s life. The actor was at a Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry store in Santa Barbara, Calif., and saw the couple looking at engagement rings. Kyle had just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq at the time, and couldn’t afford the $ 9,000 diamond ring he wanted to get Kristen, his then-fiancee.
“I noticed there was someone else in there, but didn’t give it much thought,” Kristen told the outlet. “We started looking at rings and whatnot, and he kept saying, ‘Go bigger’ and I kept saying, ‘No, look at the prices.’” Kyle started talking to the actor, who had just heard that the ring was out of their price range. They realized who Paul was after a few minutes, and Kyle told him he had just come back from Iraq.
“I remember seeing the look in his face,†Kristen said. “He kind of transformed.”
Paul then immediately took matters into his own hands and secretly told the manager to “put it on his tab,” said Irene King, a clerk at the store.

When they got a call from the jewelry store to pick up the gorgeous ring, Kyle and Kristen asked how it was purchased, thinking it may have been a gift from Paul, but employees kept their lips sealed.
They kept the story a secret for nearly a decade, but after Paul’s tragic death, Irene’s son told the story on his Facebook page so the world could know about the actor’s generous heart. After the story became known, the Uphams came forward to happily confirm the story.
“To do something like that to a perfect stranger is just unbelievable,” Irene says.
“It’s still to this day the most generous thing anyone has ever done for me,” Kristen says. “His real life speaks volumes of his character. He really did good for this world.”
“When we hand down the ring through the generations, there will always be a story to tell,” Kyle adds.
We’re so glad that Irene, Kristen and Kyle stepped forward and revealed this truly amazing story about Paul that will comfort family, friends and fans during this tragic time.
