The actor behind Peeta Mellark took on ‘Saturday Night Live’ hosting duties on Nov. 23, and he didn’t waste any time before poking a little fun at ‘The Hunger Games.’ Watch his hilarious opening monologue below!
With Josh Hutcherson hosting Saturday Night Live on Nov. 23, we were prepared for a slew of Hunger Games jokes. And though the show actually went pretty easy on our favorite fantasy series, Josh and the cast had a little fun with the movies during his opening monologue.
Josh Hutcherson & ‘SNL’ Poke Fun At ‘The Hunger Games’
Right off the bat, Josh made fun of how his character, Peeta, “immediately gets hurt and has to be carried around for the rest of movie.” Truth.
But things got way zanier after that, as SNL cast member Kate McKinnon joined Josh on stage decked out in an Effie Trinket costume. Her impersonation was spot on as she announced that SNL was starting a new tradition where one male and one female cast member would be selected to fight to the death. Sound familiar?
Noel Wells pulled a total Primrose, acting downright terrified about the prospect of being chosen and then of course, actually getting chosen. “On the bright side, I’ll get some extra stage time,” she said before popular cast mate Cecily Strong butts in to steal her thunder, volunteering as tribute.
After a throwaway orgy joke, Josh begged everyone to chill out, because The Hunger Games is just a movie. “And a book!” Kate pointed out, which led to our favorite joke of the sketch:
“It’s a book?” Josh asked confusedly.
We totally ate up this parody. The impressions, the beats, and all the little jokes were so on point and made fun of The Hunger Games hilariously while not being silly or mean.
