Vanessa Hudgens Shows Gritty Side Of Teen Pregnancy In ‘Gimme Shelter’

Vanessa Hudgens Shows Gritty Side Of Teen Pregnancy In ‘Gimme Shelter’

‘Gimme Shelter’ shows a shocking new side of teen pregnancy: and it’s definitely not a glamorous portrayal. Watch the trailer for the new film here, and find out why Vanessa’s new role is such a powerful representation of a young woman breaking the cycle.

Vanessa Hudgens is taking on her most dramatic and powerful role ever, starring in Gimme Shelter, a gritty new film that follows 16-year-old Agnes “Apple” Bailey‘s struggle to find a family and a home of her own as she learns that she is expecting a child herself. The intense story isn’t just a theatrical departure for Vanessa, but it’s a thought-provoking film that young women especially will be shocked by.

Vanessa Hudgens’ Role In ‘Gimme Shelter’ Shows Gritty Side Of Teen Pregnancy

The film is based on a true story, and even though Apple’s experiences aren’t the reality for all young women who get pregnant in their teens — or just before they are ready! — Vanessa’s portrayal is so honest and convincing that it really gives a voice to women in the same situation.

Apple’s own mother (played by Rosario Dawson) had her when she was just 19 years old, and it is eerie for Apple to discover she is following in her mother’s footsteps, even though she never wanted to. Repeating the cycle of her mom’s teen pregnancy has Apple terrified that she may be like her abusive, emotionally distant mother in other ways as well, a future she doesn’t wish on her unborn child.

‘Gimme Shelter’ Chronicles Homeless Pregnant Teen’s Difficult Journey

Apple’s major internal debate about whether to keep her child or not is a difficult, heartbreaking decision, which she knows will impact her life in positive and negative ways either way she chooses. So many young mothers can identify with her decision — and understand the backlash that she will undoubtedly face regardless of what she decides. Raising her child alone, without the baby’s father, and possibly on the streets would be so incredibly difficult, but so would losing the baby who would love her.

Though she fears repeating her mother’s mistakes, she is inspired to break the cycle and provide a better future and family for herself  – and her child. Apple’s strength of character is inspiring — and her journey will really resonate with viewers.

Gimme Shelter hits theaters on Jan. 24, 2014.
