Just awful. Competing in the Baja 1000 on Nov. 15, Kurt lost control of his speeding motorcycle and violently crashed to his death. To add to the awful tragedy, the 30-year-old racer had just gotten engaged less than three months ago.
Kurt Caselli, 30, was in second place in the Baja 1000 in Mexico, widely known in motocross as one of the most grueling courses, when he reportedly collided with a “small animal” and was flung from his bike. The tragic crash proved fatal, and Kurt died from severe head trauma and other significant injuries.
Kurt Caselli Dies In Tragic Baja 1000 Accident
Kurt had just about 40 miles to go in the challenging 833.1-mile race when he went down in a sandy, high-speed section of the course, his racing team, KTM Racing, said in a statement.
The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 15 and resulted in “severe head trauma.” KTM Racing explained that Kurt “died of injuries in Ensenada” after being air-lifted to a nearby hospital. As for the cause of the crash, early rumors of booby-trapping were quickly debunked, and the racing team revealed that they “discovered traces on the machine that indicate he had collided with some small animal, which apparently caused the crash.”
Kurt was a three-time AMA National Hare & Hound champion, and was named AMA Sportsman of the Year in 2007.
“Our desert racing family has lost a very special person in Kurt,” Roger Norman, president of SCORE — the organization that puts on the Baja 1000 — said in a statement. “Kurt was a superb racer and this is a tragedy that affects us all. We extend our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Caselli family. Their loss is immeasurable and we grieve with them.”
Kurt Caselli Taken From Fiance
Any sudden death in sports is tragic, but there’s an added level of heartbreak in Kurt’s case because he was just embarking on a momentous time in his life. Less than three months ago, Kurt proposed to his girlfriend, Sarah Jean White. The loving couple were engaged to be married.
Looking through Kurt’s Instagram, it’s easy to pick up on how in love he and Sarah were. “Nothing better than hearing the love of my life say YES!” he wrote after his proposal. Now Sarah has been widowed even before the wedding.
It’s such a tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sarah and the rest of Kurt’s friends and family. He will be missed.
