‘Space Jam’: Why The World Absolutely Needs A Sequel

‘Space Jam’: Why The World Absolutely Needs A Sequel

Twitter nearly imploded Nov. 18 when the words ‘Space Jam 2′ began trending, sparking rumors of a sequel to what is definitely the most important film of our time. Unfortunately for the universe, Bugs Bunny and co. will not be partnering with LeBron James to save the world with basketball, since the whole thing was a joke â€" but it shouldn’t be.

In 1996, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety and the gang partnered with NBA superstar Michael Jordan to save the world from the nefarious Mister Swackhammer and his band of newly super-sized Nerdlucks. The results were phenomenal â€" Space Jam was an ambitious, absurd, and ultimately fun little movie, one that definitely merits a sequel. Read on to find out why!

‘Space Jam 2′: A Healthy Dose Of Nostalgia

I know what you’re going to say: Enough with the ’90s, already! And in a way, you’re right. The remakes and reboots and numerous BuzzFeed lists have become excessive, to say the least. But Space Jam captured some of the best parts of this golden decade â€" the pre-9/11 innocence, the harmless, silly irreverence, and, perhaps most importantly, the Looney Tunes!

Today’s cartoon gods â€" I’m talking to you, Eric Cartman and the Griffin family â€" are cutting, wry and much darker than their past counterparts. Which is fine, since that’s just the type of world we live in right now. But revisiting the past via an absolutely absurd film franchise that partners goofy cartoon characters with NBA stars with absolutely no trace of sarcasm or cynicism would be a blast, and not just for us wacky ’90s kids.

Also, it’s not like Space Jam is so iconic* that it’s untouchable. It’s not like they’d be remaking Citizen Kane with James Franco playing the Orson Welles role. It would be totally acceptable if, 17 years later, the Nerdlucks resurfaced with more nefarious plots that for whatever reason involved sports. Make it happen, Warner Bros.!

(*Haha, just kidding, yes it is.)

‘Space Jam 2′: So Many Athletes To Choose From!

Even though LeBron has been the face of these fake Space Jam 2 posters, there’s no official rule saying we can’t change up the Space Jam mythology to include a different sport — though Metta World Peace would be fantastic if they went with the basketball route. Maybe the charismatic Peyton Manning or the uber-handsome Tom Brady could save the world from the Nerdlucks, with MJ showing up to give the boys some pointers on how to triumph over their nefarious ways.

Really, the sky’s the limit here, and that’s the entire point of Space Jam (cheesy joke alert) â€" the belief that everyone, big or small, animated or not, can fly. There are no real rules in this fantastical universe, especially rules regarding an awesome sequel.

Trust me, HollywoodLifers â€" a Space Jam sequel would not ruin your childhood, or tarnish your memories of the original film. Instead, it would open up a fun, innocent world of imagination to a younger generation, with a great mix of idols new (LeBron, Peyton, etc.) and old (Bugs) leading the way.

So, what do you think?
