Macklemore Remembers Trayvon Martin In AMAs Acceptance Speech

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis couldn’t be at the AMAs, but they came in via satellite from Miami to emotionally accept the award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, and brought up an extremely serious issue — racial profiling.

Leave it up to Macklemore to bring a positive message to the American Music Awards, without even being in attendance! He thanked his fans for the big award before giving an emotional speech, quoting Martin Luther King.

Macklemore Acknowledges Trayvon Martin At AMAs

When George Zimmerman was freed in July for killing Trayvon Martin, it caused huge reaction world wide. So, on Nov. 24, Macklemore alongside Ryan Lewis felt that it was a great time to bring awareness to profiling.

His full speech is below:

I was talking to my friend … before the show and he reminded me of a great Martin Luther King quote — ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ And due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award, I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it. This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it’s time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it.

This isn’t the first time Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have used their music to show support for a cause. At the MTV VMAs, the rap duo won Best Video with a Social Message for “Same Love,” their hit song featuring Mary Lambert.

“To watch this song in the last year spread across the world is a testament to what is happening right now in America on the forefront of equality. Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation,” Macklemore said after the big win.
